There is an appealing story to the Cambodia casinos that reside just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall gambling is not permitted. Eight gambling halls are based in a relatively tiny location in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent area, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital acquired from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, funding sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to pass, there are means around this, as is true of most borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored boat gambling hall, features 150 one armed bandits and sixty table games. The Naga river boat is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machine games and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel compound that contains numerous amenities in addition to the casino, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and 88 table games.
