Cambodia Gambling Halls

[ English ]

There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just across the border from next door Thailand, where casino gambling is against the law. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a generally tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect location, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income acquired from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of controls constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, investment sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are allegedly necessary to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most border crossings.

The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling hall, highlights 150 slot machine games and sixty tables. The Naga river boat is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of twenty-one, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long opened. A total of 150 slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slot machines and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around resort and hotel compound that highlights numerous luxuries on top of the casino, which contains ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight tables.
